52 Weeks of Mental Mastery - Week 41: Reframe the Negative

Reframe the Negative ~ Flip Setbacks into Setups

đź’¬ Quote

“When things are going bad, there’s going to be some good that will come from it.”
- Jocko Willink

🔍 Question

When something goes wrong, do you see the setback or the setup?

đź“– Story

Former Navy SEAL commander Jocko Willink has a simple way of responding when things don’t go as planned.

He says one word:

“Good.”

Didn’t get the job you wanted? Good.
Didn’t win the championship? Good.
Got beat by someone better that day? Good.

Not because the setback feels good in the moment.

But because every challenge brings an opportunity to learn, adjust, and grow stronger.

The obstacle isn’t the end of the story.

It’s part of the training.

🧠 Science

Your brain constantly assigns meaning to events.

The meaning you give a setback determines how you respond.

If you label it as failure, your brain shuts down learning and motivation.

But when you reframe it as an opportunity, your brain activates problem-solving and growth.

The event doesn’t change.

Your perspective does.

👣 Step Forward

The next time something doesn’t go your way this week:

Pause.

Say the word:

“Good.”

Then ask yourself:

What can I learn from this?
How can this make me better?

Flip the setback into a setup.

💥The obstacle isn’t the problem.
The story you tell yourself about it is.
